General Questions that the client should ask his/her therapist before undergoing Ipl / Vpl / Microdermabrasion / Chemical Peels
If you plan to have any of the above treatments, for your own safety and assurance, you should read the following before hand.
- The client should insist on a PATCH TEST. A patch test is performed where the therapist will apply the treatment to a small area on the skin to test whether or
not there will be any adverse reactions to the treatment. Patch tests need to be performed at least 48hrs prior to the commencement of the full treatment.
- The client should insist that a THERMAL SAFETY TEST is performed as well as a SKIN SENSITIVITY TEST. The thermal test ensures that the client is easily able
to establish the difference between the sensations of heat and cold. The sensitivity test will establish whether or not the client is able to adequately feel sharpness
on the skin and it will also give the client and the therapist an idea of how quickly the skin will react to treatment and how quickly the client’s skin will visibly
show up sensitivity in the form of redness on the skin.
- The client would also be wise to ask the therapist to describe to them how the treatment SHOULD feel prior to the commencement of the treatment.
In this way, the client will be able to have some idea of what to expect during treatment and report any feelings to the contrary.
- The client should also enquire as to what AFTER EFFECTS may be experienced, such as redness, or any marks that could be expected or any changes to the texture/colour
of the skin that may be as a result of the treatment itself.
- Clients should also enquire about what they can do to look after the newly treated area post-treatment. Enquire as to what products should and should not be used. Also ask the therapist to
recommend the best products to use at home to best reinforce the treatment and preserve the results of the treatment.
- Clients MUST tell the therapist if they are on any medication (chronic or acute) as certain medical drugs can cause bad reactions if the skin is then treated.
- The client should take note of how much detail the therapist asks of him/her as these treatments require in depth consultations and the therapist needs to ask much background information of the client.
If a therapist is too eager to start treatment without performing a thorough consultation, the client should perhaps think twice about continuing with the treatment.
Use these guidelines to ensure that you have a good experience with your treatment.
